Wilms Tumor


Wilms tumor is a kind of kidney cancer that normally affects children of the age group 3-8 years old. It is considered as the most common kind of kidney cancer among children. The tumor affects both the kidneys, but normally develops in one only. It is believed that the tumor occurs when a baby is in the womb only. The cancer is rare as it hardly affects 1 child out of 200000-250000 children. The Wilms tumor run in the families, therefore sibling and twins are likely to get affected from the condition

The exact cause of the tumor is not known. However, it is believed that due to some changes in one or more genes, the tumor occurs. It has been seen that children affected with Wilms tumor are born with some congenital anomalies like iris of the eye, urinary tract problem, etc.
